The rivers in Konkan are an important part of Maharashtra Geography for MPSC and other competitive examinations. Unlike the major east-flowing river systems of Maharashtra, most Konkan rivers are short, west-flowing rivers that originate in the Sahyadri hills and flow towards the Arabian Sea.
For students, the easiest way to study Konkan rivers is to connect them with their district, taluka, creek and coastal outlet.
The administrative Konkan Division consists of five districts—Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg—and 47 talukas. Maharashtra's Groundwater Surveys and Development Agency identifies the major rivers of these districts and notes the west-flowing nature of the Konkan river system.
Easy Rule to Remember:
Konkan = Sahyadri → Short Rivers → Arabian Sea
Why Are the Rivers in Konkan Mostly Short?
The geography of Konkan makes its river system different from the Godavari, Krishna and Bhima systems.
The Sahyadri mountain range lies to the east, while the Arabian Sea lies to the west. Because of this steep east-to-west slope, many rivers originate in or near the Sahyadri and travel a comparatively short distance before reaching the sea.
The region also receives heavy monsoon rainfall. As a result, many streams and rivers carry substantial water during the monsoon but may experience lower flows during the summer.
Geography Chain:
Sahyadri → River → Creek / Estuary → Arabian Sea

How to Study Konkan Rivers for MPSC
Step 1: Remember the District
Palghar → Thane → Raigad → Ratnagiri → Sindhudurg
Step 2: Add the Major Rivers
Learn the major rivers of each district first.
Step 3: Add the Creek Connection
For example: Patalganga → Dharamtar and Vashishti → Dabhol.
Step 4: Add the Taluka
Finally, connect the river with its important taluka. This creates a mental chain rather than a collection of isolated facts.
The most useful revision chain is: District → Taluka → River → Creek → Arabian Sea.
