  • The first-ever woman conductor employed by the Haryana Roadways has lost her job after roadways employees called off their 18-day strike and joined duty.
  • Rewari resident Sharmila, 32, a differently abled mother of two daughters, was given a three-month contractual job by the government when the state’s public transport service was paralysed due to the strike.
  • However, Sharmila was sacked from her job on 18 Oct, a day after the striking employees returned to work.
  • “The government has ruined my Diwali. I was hoping to get a permanent job since the government talks about Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. Two more women joined as conductors in roadways after me.
  • The government could have made an exception and saved the jobs of three of us. But it did not even let us work for three months,” said Sharmila, who suffers 40% disability in one of her legs.
  • “We helped the government in their time of crisis. But the government paid no heed to crisis in our lives and fired us in the blink of an eye,” she added.
  • Sharmila said she comes from a poor background and had been searching for a job for the past eight years to support her family.

  • A collective of organic farmers has initiated a programme to help and rebuild the farms and livelihood of the farmers in Idukki, the hub of spice cultivation in Kerala, which was one of the worst affected districts in heavy rains and flood that hit the state in August.
  • Manarcadu Social Service Society (Mass) a collective of 5000 organic farmers cultivating spices, coffee and cocoa in 5800 acres is hoping to help the affected farmers through organic farming. In the process , it hopes to turn Idukki into fully organic farming district.
  • Bijumon Kurien, president of Mass, said farmer-focused project will associate with NGOs to involve more than 1 lakh families across 52 panchayats and two municipalities of Idukki.
  • ``The three-year project will have several phases focused on different aspects of farmer development that include organic farming, employment and eco-tourism opportunities in Kerala,’’ he said.
  • Mass, formed 17 years ago with focus on organic farming, will distribute 2 lakh saplings free to the farmers for organic cultivation in Idukki. The project will reach out to farmers across the state in phases.
  • `` As per our survey, the Idukki farmers have suffered a loss of about Rs 450 crore from destruction of farms in the recent flood,’’ Kurien said.

  • As the planet heats and mankind continues to decimate natural habitats, scientists concede that the only way to save some types of vegetation is in seed banks giant repositories of thousands of species preserved for future generations.
  • Nations agreed a global strategy in 2002 to conserve at least three quarters of threatened plant species with the aim of recovering and restoring their stocks in nature at some point. Scientists working in several seed banks around the world currently conserve seeds by drying them before freezing.
  • But new research by botanists at Britain's Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, found that 36% of "critically endangered" plants and trees aren't bankable under the current method because their seeds die when dried and so cannot be preserved by freezing.

  • Ministry of Food Processing Industries(MoFPI) on Monday approved the operationalisation strategy for Operation Greens that seeks to ensure price stability of crops like potato and tomato
  • Operation Greens was announced in the Budget speech of 2018-19 with an outlay of Rs 500 crore to stabilise the supply of tomato, onion and potato (TOP) crops and ensure their availability throughout the country round the year without price volatility.
  • Approving the measures, Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal said, ''Price volatility of TOP crops wreaks havoc in households of this country.
  • This is a revolutionary scheme which has evolved after sustained dialogue with all stakeholders and we have decided the strategy to stabilise prices of TOP crops and to make sure that TOP crops reach all households in the country round the year.
  • Under, Short term Price Stabilisation Measures, NAFED will be the nodal agency to implement price stabilisation measures.
  • MoFPI will provide 50 per cent of the subsidy on the two components transportation of Tomato Onion Potato (TOP) crops from production to storage and hiring of appropriate storage facilities for TOP crops.

  • The Centre has released more than Rs. 113 crore to six border states as part of its plan to ameliorate the problems of people living in isolated locations, officials said 5th Nov.
  • The Home Ministry recently released Rs. 113.36 crore to Assam, Nagaland, Sikkim, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand under the Border Area Development Programme (BADP).
  • The home ministry, till now, has released a total of Rs. 637.98 crore during the 2018-19 period to states having an International Border, a government official said.
  • The funds released are in addition to the Rs. 1,100-crore released in 2017-18 for the all-round development of villages located along the International Border in 17 states.
  • The BADP schemes include construction of primary health centres, schools, supply of drinking water, community centres, connectivity, drainage to enable sustainable living in border areas
  • It also covers schemes or activities relating to Swachhta Abhiyan, skill development programmes, promotion of sports activities in border areas, promotion of rural tourism, border tourism, protection of heritage sites, construction of helipads in remote and inaccessible hilly areas, which do not have road connectivity.
