  • Commander Abhilash Tomy of the Indian Navy has embarked on a unique voyage. The officer is the only invitee from Asia to participate in the prestigious Golden Globe Race (GGR) that commenced from Les Sables d’Olonne harbour in France on 1 july
  • Abhilash Tomy is the only Indian to sail around the world non-stop and solo and is ready for his second solo circumnavigation. He will sail the boat 'Thuriya' around the world in historic 'Golden Globe Race'.
  • All the 18 participants are required to sail around the world, single-handed and non-stop. The uniqueness of the race is that boat designs and technology newer than 1968 is not permitted, hence use of Global Positioning System (GPS), satellite communication, navigational aids, etc is forbidden.
  • Participants will write their logs and determine the weather for themselves. Only occasionally will they talk to loved ones and the outside world, when ham radios allow.
  • The Golden Globe Race is being conducted by Sir Robin Knox Johnston of UK to commemorate 50 years since the world’s first solo non-stop circumnavigation undertaken by him in 1968 onboard the Indian built boat, Suhaili.
  • Commander Abhilash Tomy is one of India’s most prominent sailors. He has covered 53,000 nautical miles under sail, including a solo non-stop circumnavigation of the globe in 2012-13 onboard Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Mhadei. He is also a recipient of the Kirti Chakra, Mac Gregor and Tenzing Norgay awards.
  • Commander Abhilash Tomy is representing India, sailing on a replica of Suhaili. The indigenously built sailing vessel ‘Thuriya’ has been built by M/s Aquarius Shipyard Ltd at Goa, an official release by the Defence Ministry said.

  • Addressing a function in New Delhi Finance Minister Piyush Goyal said that Goods & Service Tax has long term benefits for the economy. Union Minister Arun Jaitley hailed GST on the completion of one year and said that GST was necessary for the nation.
  • Addressing a function to mark GST Day celebrations through video conferencing, Union Minister Arun Jaitley said, the government is in the process of rationalizing GST rates. He said, after the implementation of GST the entire country has become an unified market and tax payers are getting the benefit of reduction in tax rates.
  • Jaitley said that increase in collection of direct tax due to implementation of GST has enabled the GST council to reduce and rationalise the rates.
  • Addressing the function Union Finance Minister Piyush Goyal said that GST has played an important role in ease of doing business across the country and it has increased transparency.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said, with the implementation of GST, tax rates have reduced and revenue collection has risen.
  • It is noteworthy that implementation of GST is a win-win situation for all...be it traders or tax payers....needless to say that it's an important step in building a new India.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi Congratulated countrymen on the special occasion of GST completing 1 year. In a tweet, the PM said, “A vibrant example of cooperative federalism and a 'Team India' spirit, GST has brought a positive change in the Indian economy.
  • He further added that GST has brought growth, simplicity and transparency. It is: Boosting formalisation. Enhancing productivity. Furthering 'Ease of Doing Business.' Benefitting small and medium enterprises.”

  • After aggressive representations from Jain religious and social organizations and other Jiv Daya Premi (animal welfare) NGOs to state BJP president Jitu Vaghani, the Maharashtra government has cancelled the mega project of exporting the animals to be used for slaughtering in the middle East countries.
  • State BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya said: “Soon after the representations from the Jain and Jiv Daya Premi groups, state BJP president Jitu Vaghani spoke to National BJP president Amit Shah and Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and requested them to take action to stop the export of animals. The Maharashtra CM immediately took action in this regard. All the Jain groups and Jiv Daya Premi groups have appreciated it.”
  • “Congress, whose members participated in a beef party in Kerala and which did not take any action against them, has no right to speak on cow protection and animal welfare,” Pandya added.
  • To this, Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said, “The BJP’s double face has been exposed. Those who were talking about stopping the pink revolution are now exporting animals. The BJP is falsely trying to take credit, as had it not been for the Jain religious, social groups and other NGOs, the BJP government would not have stopped the export of animals. In Gujarat, BJP has failed to protect cows.”

  • Noted artist Anjolie Ela Menon, 78 on 30june received here the National Kalidas Samman for visual arts from the Madhya Pradesh government.
  • The award was conferred in recognition of her insightful and sensitive portrayal of the identity and spirit of women through her meaningful paintings in a variety of media.
  • With her first solo exhibition being held in Delhi in 1958, Menon is counted among India’s most accomplished artists and is the recipient of numerous national and international awards including the Padma Shri. She recently received a doctorate from Rabindra Bharati University.
  • Artist A. Ramachandran was also conferred with the Kalidas Award on 30june.
